Subject
Academic stress, menstrual cycle, online learning
Description
Background: Academic stress is a physical, mental or emotional disorder caused by a discrepancy
between environmental demands and the students' actual resources. Online learning during the
covid-19 pandemic is a stressor that triggers the release of the hormone cortisol which will affect
the production of FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luitenizing Hormone) hormones
and cause menstrual cycle irregularities. This study aims to determine the relationship between
academic stress levels and the menstrual cycle during the COVID-19 pandemic at SMA
Muhammadiyah 2 Palembang. Methods: This type of research is quantitative in nature with an
analytical survey design through a cross sectional approach. The sampling technique used was
non-probability, namely purposive sampling as many as 44 students. Data analysis using Chi-
Square test. The results showed that the majority of respondents experienced moderate academic
stress 18 (40.9%) and the majority of respondents had abnormal menstrual cycles 26 (59.1%). The
results of the Chi-Square test obtained p-value = 0.031, which means that there is a significant
relationship between the level of academic stress and the menstrual cycle during the covid-19
pandemic. Conclusion: stress due to online learning causes disruption of students' menstrual
cycles.
