Description

ABSTRACT
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that around 1.13 people in the world
sufferfrom hypertension. Complications of hypertension cause heart disease, stroke
and kidney disease. One of the non-pharmacological therapies is deep breathing
relaxation and progressive muscle relaxation. The purpose of this study was to
determine the effect of a combination of deep breathing relaxation and progressive
muscle relaxation on blood pressure in patients with hypertension. The research
design used was Quasi Experimental with a Pretest-Posttest approach with a
control group. Sampling in this study using purposive sampling technique as many
as 15 respondents in the treatment group and 15 control groups. The results of the
analysis used the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney test. The results of the
analysis with the Wilcoxon test showed that systolic and diastolic blood pressure
showed a significant decrease before and after the intervention of a combination of
deep breathing relaxation and progressive muscle relaxation where systolic p value
= 0.001 and diastolic p value = 0.003 (α<0.05). While the results of the Mann
Whitney test showed that the combination of deep breathing relaxation and
progressive muscle relaxation had a significant effect on systolic blood pressure
with p value = 0.024 and diastolic with p value = 0.029 (α<0.05). It was concluded
that there was an effect between the combination of deep breathing relaxation and
progressive muscle relaxation on blood pressure in patients with hypertension. The
results of this study can be input for health workers to provide health education,
especially to patients with hypertension about the benefits of a combination of deep
breathing relaxation and progressive muscle relaxation to lower blood pressure
