Description

ABSTRACT
Background: An active smoker is someone who smokes and immediately inhale the
cigarette smoke. A passive smoker is someone who does not smoke but is exposed
to cigarette smoke by active smokers ± 15 minutes in one day for one week (Parwati,
2018) from several studies, exposure to cigarette smoke can affect Low Baby
Weight in mothers who exposed to cigarette smoke. Low birth weight (LBW) are
babies with a birth weight of less than 2500 grams. Objective: To analyze the
relationship between age, parity, pregnancy distance, education, occupation,
exposure to cigarette smoke on newborn weight in mothers who gave birth.
Methods: This study is analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The population
and sample are 50 using total sampling technique. Research data obtained through
questionnaires filled out by respondents, analysis using chi-square test. Results:
The results of statistical tests showed that the variables that were statistically
significantly related to the birth weight of newborns were age, parity, education,
and exposure to cigarette smoke with p<0.05, while for the variable distance
between pregnancy and occupation there was no significant relationship. with p
value> 0.05. Discussion and suggestions: The direct effect of substances contained
in cigarette smoke such as nicotine and carbon monoxide can cause contractions
in blood vessels which can result in reduced blood flow to the fetus through the fetal
center, thereby reducing the distribution of nutrients needed by the fetus, as well as
can reduce the entire work of hemoglobin that binds oxygen to be distributed to the
body. The results of this study are expected to the Bhayangkara Palembang
Hospital to provide health promotions in the form of posters that can be placed on
the door/wall of each inpatient room regarding the dangers of exposure to cigarette
smoke for pregnant women and their environment.
