Aspek dasar pada bantuan hidup dasar dimulai dari mengenali tanda-tanda seseorang mengalami henti jantung, mengaktifkan Emergency Medical Service (EMS), melakukan resusitasi jantung paru, dan defibrilasi dengan segera menggunakan Automated External Defibrilator (AED) pada korban (Berg et all, 2010). Basic Life Support (BLS) merupakan pertolongan pertama yang harus dilakukan untuk menyelamatkan pasien dalam keadaan gawat darurat dan mengancam jiwa (Guyton dan Hall, 2010) Bantuan hidup dasar adalah tindakan darurat untuk membebaskan jalan napas, membantu pernapasan dan mempertahankan sirkulasi darah tanpa menggunakan alat bantu. Tindakan BHD sangat penting pada pasien trauma terutama pada pasien dengan henti jantung yang tiga perempat kasusnya terjadi di luar rumah sakit (Alkatiri, 20010).
